New York City has the highest number of IMG friendly Internal Medicine Residency Programs.

Pros:

   - Most programs have almost all IMGs
   -Most program sponsor J1 and H1B visas
   -If you are staying in New York City, you can interview in many programs without spending
    too much money on travelling or lodging.
   -NYC is very immigrant friendly
   -You can find people, food , culture from all parts of the world
   -Many Observership/ USCE opportunities are available

Cons:

   -New York programs are very busy, residency is tough, Programs can be malignant for IMGs
   -Programs may not be very compliant with ACGME resident work hour rules.
   -NYC is an expensive place to live, its not easy to own a car
   -Some Neighborhoods can be unsafe
   -Nurses, Hospital Staff, Patients are not the nicest/easiest people to work with.

Designated Preliminary Positions  are for interns who are going into sub-specialty surgical training like Neuro-Surgery, Opthalmology, ENT.


Non Designated Preliminary Positions are open for anyone who would like to get one year of surgical training experience. Many applicants apply for non designated spots as a backup to categorical surgical spots, in case they don't end matching in a categorical position.
